The Foundation for Educational Service (FES) is receiving applications from prospective candidates who would like to work in the role of Child Support Worker (Resource Centre) for the Skolasajf 2024 programme starting from 10th July 2024. The contract will start on the 1st July 2024 in view of possible training and preparation required for the role.This is applicable for all Centres in Malta and Gozo.

Training at Centre - 8th and 9th July 2024 (Compulsory) 


Remuneration 

Rate of pay is € 8.91 per hour with an additional hourly allowance €1.50 

The Employee shall work on a part-time basis up to a maximum of thirty (30) hours per week. Rostering of employees will be affected according to the exigencies of the service.Employees on an indefinite contract will revert to their indefinite role for the September Bridge Holidays.

Those who have already occupied this role with FES during the past year (2023) and who provided proof in this regard, will by-pass the interview. This depends also on previous performance with FES.

Eligibility Criteria

As from this year, all applicants that do not possess a qualification in education, will be required to attend a number of compulsory training sessions. 

By the closing time and date of this call for applications, applicants must be in possession of the below eligibility criteria: 

  1. Applicants must be in possession of either:

    • A qualification pegged at MQF Level 4; OR 

    • MCAST diploma in Health & Social Care; OR 

    • University advanced certificate in Day and Residential Care; OR 

    • A formal qualification directly related to the social sector. 

  2. Qualifications related to education (e g teaching) or a valid IFE Certificate or confirmation of acceptance into the Child Support Worker Development course offered by FES, organised by IFE. 

  3. Ability to communicate in both Maltese and English

    • Payslip or contract for the previously employed role of Child Support Worker or  

    • latest MEYR payslip if candidate is a MEYR employee or

Job Description 

JOB PURPOSE 

  • The Child Support Worker’s responsibility and accountability for the students’ well-being must constantly remain within the Foundation’s policies and procedures.  

  • The role of the Child Support Worker is to assist the Centre Coordinator, Playworker with Extra Responsibilities other staff members within a Resource Centre. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Learning Support  

  • Assisting the Centre Coordinator and staff in the delivery of activities.  

  • Ensuring the safety and well-being of students through reporting any areas of concern to the Centre Coordinator and undertaking any required First Aid as the need arises.  

  • Report immediately any areas of concern, such as bullying, suspected abuse on children or any other grave matter to the Centre Coordinator.  

  • Be knowledgeable about various disabilities / difficulties experienced by service users;  

  • Liaise with the staff at the resource centre in the preparation of activities and resources that are safe, age appropriate and meet the specific needs of service users as guided by the Individual Educational Plan (IEP); Liaise with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other educational and therapeutic institutions as instructed by the Centre Coordinator;  

  • Support in good behaviour management procedures and assist in the adaptation of activities to meet the needs of the students.  

  • Participating in hydrotherapy, multi-sensory, sensory integration, and other sessions, in Skolasajf Resource Centres where such services are available, to ensure access to educational and personal entitlements of students;  

  • Following guidelines in reports issued to parents by professionals/professional bodies (e.g. SPL for feeding and communication, physiotherapist for handling …)  

  • Supporting service users during activities held outside the Skolasajf premises.  

Personal Support  

  • Accompany students during mealtimes and assist in feeding when so required.  

  • Assist students in maintaining personal hygiene regardless of student gender, as well as, in their personal appearance. This includes: 

  • cleaning and washing, including accompanying the student to the toilet;  

  • undressing and dressing; cleaning, washing and showering; and  

  • changing of nappies, sanitary towels and incontinence pads.  

  • Seeing to the mobility, posture and seating needs including lifting pupils and pushing pupils in wheelchairs according to Health and Safety Regulations issued under the Health and Safety Authority Act taking into consideration international guidelines.  

  • Handle and lift clients as required, ensuring that proper techniques are utilised;  

The present guidelines are:  

  1. lifting to 27 kilograms shall be undertaken by one Child Support Worker;  
  2. lifting between 28 and 54 kilograms (both inclusive) shall be undertaken by 2 persons; beyond 54 kilograms, a mechanical lift is to be used;  
  3. pushing wheelchairs: up to 45 kilograms occasionally; up to 28 kilograms frequently; and up to 9 kilograms as necessary.  

Transport-related Duties 

Without prejudice to the obligations of the owner and driver of the vehicle concerned regarding the safety of passengers and the full observance of the law and regulations related to transport matters, the Care Worker will be doing escort duties on transport before admission and after school dismissal. In such cases, the Child Support Worker shall:  

  1. assist in the boarding and alighting of students on and off the transport vehicle  
  2. make sure students are always supervised and assisted   
  3. in the case of students who are wheelchair/buggy users, apply the restraints on the wheelchair/buggy;  
  4. secure the passenger restraint on the students (who are not wheelchair / buggy users) to ensure safety during transportation;  

Other Duties  

  • Maintain the necessary level of confidentiality commensurate to the level of responsibility but also shares all relevant information with Management who is also bound by confidentiality. Any information requested by parents / guardians is to be given to the centre coordinator.  

  • The officer shall perform other duties assigned by the Chief Executive Officer, according to the exigencies of the Foundation for Educational Services
