 Klabb 3-16 - Child Support Worker (Part time - Indefinite contract)

Vacancies for the post of part-time Child Support Worker (CSW) for an indefinite contract have arisen within the Foundation for the service of Klabb 3-16 starting from the Scholastic Year 2024/2025.

CSWs are remunerated at the rate of €8.91 per hour. The employee shall also receive any bonuses and any other benefits which s/he is entitled to in terms of law on a pro-rata basis. The opening hours of the service are between 14:30pm and 18:00pm, Monday to Friday, from September till end of May and from 12.00pm till 18:00pm during the month of June. During the scholastic term, CSWs are expected to be available to work at least three (3) times a week. CSWs who provide the most availability will be given priority for rostering. During Skolasajf employees are expected to work from Monday to Friday during core hours and offer availability to work shifts during after hours.

Eligibility Criteria

By the time of application the prospective candidate is expected to:-

  1. Provide proof of:
    • experience in working as an full-time LSE (Learning Support Educator) or
    • attendance for the Child Support Worker (CSW) course organised by FES or
    • Level 4 qualification and a letter confirming availability to attend a course organised by FES/IFE or
    • Worked 6 months as a playworker and a letter confirming availability to attend a course  organised by FES/IFE or
    • Worked for Skolasajf as a CSW and certificate of training by IFE 
    • *employees’ probation will only be considered successful when proof of CSW course completion is provided
  2. Ability to communicate in both English and/or Maltese -  Level 3 Certificate (O-Level) or Language Proficiency Certificate in Maltese and/or English;
  3. Recent police conduct (issued within the past six months).
  4. Those candidates who are under 18 years of age are to upload the birth certificate and a medical note from their doctor stating that they are fit for work (saved in pdf format); only those candidates who are 17 years of age and older are eligible to apply
  5. Food handling certificate if available
  6. First aid ceritificate if available.  
  7. Employment history issued by Jobsplus as proof of experience. 

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensuring that the programme of activities delivered is interesting, valuable and appropriate to the children  entrusted to your care by providing a variety of play and learning opportunities and identifying and accommodating changing needs.
  • Ensuring the safety and well-being of programme users through checking equipment, undertaking safety measures and organising activities appropriate to the users at any given time.
  • Ensuring that parents, carers and other visitors receive appropriate information and advice through the centre coordinator.
  • Liaising with the class playworker to provide and adapt a variety of appropriate play opportunities and activities for children within your care taking into consideration the children’s needs, cultural backgrounds,e tc.
  • Contributing to the accountability of the centre through assisting in the maintenance of agreed records including registers, accident books, etc.
  • Evaluation of activity adaptation based on childs’ needs, engagement, etc.
  • Lead groups of children in specific sport, games, crafts and learning activities.  Manage behaviours and adapt the activity to meet the needs of groups or individuals.

Learning Support

  • supporting and collaborating colleagues in the running of Klabb 3-16 activities;
  • assisting in the preparation of educational materials and playing an active part in all the components of the instructional and educational process in class;
  • promoting an inclusive community of learners, in collaboration with all members of Klabb 3-16 staff where all students are valued and respected. This includes collaborative work in school and with other agencies, such as Resource Centres, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO)’s and other educational and therapeutic environments;
  • following guidelines in reports issued to parents by professionals/professional bodies ex. CDAU; promoting at all times the aims, ethos and policies of the Foundation for Educational Services Skolasajf and actively working as a member of the staff team;
  • assisting in the preparation, dissemination and use of teaching resources;
  • supporting student/s during activities held outside the Klabb 3-16 premises.

Personal Support

Supporting pupils with individual educational needs in their personal care and hygiene needs. This includes:

  • toileting - accompanying the child to the toilet; undressing and dressing; cleaning, changing of sanitary towels and incontinence pads;
  • seeing to the mobility, posture and seating needs including lifting pupils and pushing pupils in wheelchairs according to Health and Safety Regulations issued under the Health and Safety Authority Act taking into consideration international guidelines.
  • ensuring the maximum educational benefit and safety for individual pupils at all times by providing them with assistance during physical education, games, excursions and therapy sessions, as well as normal feeding during midmorning and mid-day breaks and at other times as required.

The present guidelines shall be:

  • lifting up to 27 kilograms shall be undertaken by one Child Support Worker;
  • lifting between 28 and 54 kilograms (both inclusive) shall be undertaken by 2 persons;
  • beyond 54 kilograms, a mechanical lift is to be used;
  • pushing wheelchairs: up to 45 kilograms occasionally; up to 28 kilograms frequently; and up to 9 kilograms as necessary.

Transport-related Duties

Without prejudice to the obligations of the owner and driver of the vehicle concerned regarding the safety of passengers and the full observance of the law and regulations related to transport matters, a Child Support Worker may be required to carry out transport-related duties, with student with individual educational needs, should the requirement be indicated by the Foundation for Educational Services.

In such cases, the Child Support Worker shall:

  • assist in the boarding and un-boarding of pupils on and off the transport vehicle and, in the case of students who are wheelchair/buggy users, put on the restraints on the wheelchair/buggy and also put on the passenger restraint on the students to ensure safety during transportation;
  • carry out transport supervision duties to and from school when the transport of pupils during normal school hours is necessary; supervision duties carried out  during centre hours shall be remunerated at  the same rate of pay per hour. 

d) Other Duties

  • The Officer shall perform other duties assigned by the Chief Executive Officer, according to the exigencies of the Foundation for Educational Services
